Go Red for Women Friday

Go Red for Women Friday - Whether you're working or not, put on some red Friday. Not only will you stand out against all the white snow, you'll be saying something about heart disease.

Friday is National Wear Red Day. The day was created because more women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined.

Carrie Lehtonen says she was 31 when she had her heart attack. She was on a bike ride - traveling 150 miles in two days.

She thought she was feeling bad because of the exercise and it taught her an important lesson.

"Really listen to your body. I was very fortunate that I was with friends that insisted I go to the hospital cause if I had been home by myself and I wouldn't have thought anything of it being related to my heart and I wouldn't have gone to the hospital. So I think it's really important for people to listen to their body," she said.

Symptoms of a heart attack are often different for women compared to men. Go Red for Women encourages women to educate themselves and their families.

The American Heart Association estimates one woman dies every minute from heart disease.
